02 • SPOTLIGHT • SUMMER 2018 INTRODUCTION TO

‘Sustainability’ is the word on everyone’s

lips at the moment – from politicians to journalists, to tech companies and property developers.

It can sometimes seem like a topic that is overworked, to the point of eliciting sighs of

boredom whenever it is mentioned in meetings or seminars. Tere is no doubt, however, of its importance in today’s world. Sustainability can be defined as ‘meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of generations to meet their own needs in the future’ – and this is something we should all be working towards in every aspect we can.

In this season’s edition of Spotlight, we wanted to take the discussion around

sustainability down a different route, focusing on smart and sustainable. Tis meant moving away from well-known topics such as MEES regulations and sustainable property

development, and focusing more on the innovative sustainable projects, resources and ideas that are contributing towards saving our planet.

Our Valuation department have explored how Bristol is evolving into a ‘smart city’, using pioneering digital technology across the city in various ways to support its residents and

contribute towards social, environmental and economic sustainability. It is interesting to read about how many different groups are involved in this project, including the council, local entrepreneurs and universities.

We invited Helen Bramah, Communications Manager for Major Projects in Bristol City Council to take this topic further, and focus specifically on Bristol’s upcoming Enterprise Zone –

a significant urban regeneration project offering space for tech start-ups, new homes and improved infrastructure to serve the city.

Te South West is a large proponent of electric vehicles, and we can expect to see these become more commonplace on our roads within the next few years. Our Automotive & Roadside

department has critiqued whether electric vehicles really are the answer to a more sustainable future, whilst our Industrial & Logistics team have explored the potential impact that electric lorries could have on logistics operators and the industrial market.

We hope this edition of Spotlight reignites some excitement and inspiration around the topic of sustainability; I know our contributors have enjoyed writing about projects and concepts that are forward-thinking and depict a brighter, cleaner and greener future.
