it will affect the cost of any new design and build facility because the specification will be considerably higher than institutional builds, and therefore developers will need this reflected within the rent. Despite these concerns, some logistics
companies such as FedEx, UPS and DHL have already opted for a delivery of the Tesla Semis once they have finished production. However, whilst these electric lorries will bring brand value to those who can afford it, there will others asking whether the brand is worth it. Tesla has produced what looks like a wonderful
machine for the environment, as well as a faster and slicker version of the diesel lorries. But with production of the new HGVs not set to begin until 2019, and taking into account the prevailing problems with the Model 3 production line, it may be years before we actually see these vehicles on the road, if at all in their current form.
In the meantime, Tesla will face stiff
competition from existing industry players who are already well advanced in the development and implementation of new zero-emission truck designs. Tese other players are not opting to reinvent the wheel by shaving off fractions with drive times, but instead focusing on improving the emissions output from existing vehicles, which could impact on Tesla’s unique selling point. It is too early to predict the impact these
electric lorries will really have on the industrial market. Whilst it’s clear that road freight is heading in the direction of electric vehicles, whether that’s with the Tesla Semi or another competing brand, it’s safe to say that there are still some hurdles that need to be overcome before they are a constant on our roads.
