Bristol has recently overtaken London as the UK’s Smartest City, according to the Second


Smart Cities Index. Te index assessed 20 cities, outlining their key projects, strategies and general willingness to use digital


technology in order to improve local services, from transport to healthcare.

It is delivering research and development initiatives that help towards developing Bristol into a ‘smart city’. Bristol’s Smart Operations Centre opened

at the end of 2017 and is effectively the amalgamation of Bristol’s various support services. It acts as a control centre both on a day-to-day basis and also in the event of a major emergency. Te Smart Operations Centre integrates the council’s Emergency Control Centre, Traffic Control Centre and Community Safety (CCTV) Control Rooms. Te centre

forefront of innovation is through projects such as Driverless cars. Tere are currently two main driverless car


trials, known as Venturer and Flourish, which are underway in the Bristol area. It is clear that this future thinking is a major success within Bristol as there are a large number of local organisations contributing towards the trials such as the University of Bristol, UWE, South Gloucestershire Council, Bristol City Council and Airbus to name just a few. Te above outlines just a couple of initiatives to


show how Bristol has worked towards achieving its ‘Smarty City’ status. Let’s hope that Bristol’s advanced and thought provoking ideas keeps it at the forefront of pioneering innovations.
