Not to EV? Tat is the question

For those of us in the Automotive sector, it is a well held belief that the Government has got its fuel policy in a mess.

or years, the Government has promoted diesel cars for their fuel efficiency and their reduced CO2 emissions, which helps with the country’s policy to reduce CO2 levels to meet the Paris
Accord. Now it transpires that diesel engines emit more nitrogen oxide than petrol cars and hence the Government are seeking to tax diesels out of existence. So what is the answer? Te Government has thrown its weight behind
electric vehicles (EVs), and it has stated that petrol/diesel hybrid vehicles will be banned by
the year 2040. Certainly we have seen public sentiment move this way with the number of EVs on the road rising from around 3,500 in 2013 to more than 130,000 by the end of December 2017. During 2017, 47,000 plug-in cars were sold – an
increase of over 10,000 on 2016. Tis represented 2.9% of all new car registrations during the year and EVs now account for 1.9% of the total new car market. Whilst clearly electric vehicles have lower
emissions than petrol or diesel, is this the answer? In my opinion, no, for a number of reasons.
