CROWD CONTROL —

Charlotte Flach takes a look at five alternative destinations to visit in Peru as the country tackles overtourism

T

he number of visitors to Peru has been growing steadily since 2010 with international tourism arrivals to the

country reaching a record-breaking 4.4 million last year. The most commonly frequented destinations are Lima, Cusco and Tacna. A key strategy for Peru has been promoting travel

to lesser-known regions to combat overtourism. “There are a lot of opportunities for archaeological and adventure travel in northern Peru, and travel to the Peruvian Amazon is also increasing in popularity as global interest in wildlife and conservation experiences rises,” says Sandra Doig, incoming tourism deputy director at PromPeru. “We are also continuing to drive visitation in shoulder seasons.” Here are five alternative destinations and attractions for travellers to visit to help combat overtourism in Peru.

1

Kuelap Fortress Amazonas, north-eastern Peru

Kuelap Fortress was built between 600 and 900 years before Machu Picchu. Until recently

it was difficult to access, but the construction of a new cable car in 2017 has made the pre- Inca city more accessible, with the journey to the top taking just 20 minutes. The location provides exceptional photo opportunities with very few crowds, and is ideal for millennials looking to capture authentic experiences on camera.

2

Chan Chan La Libertad,

north-western Peru Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu Kingdom, is the largest city of pre- Hispanic America and a Unesco World Heritage Site. This city was once the largest in the Americas, boasting temples, advanced water systems and highly skilled fishermen. Its massive walls are richly decorated with geometric figures, stylised animals and mythological beings. Chan Chan’s archaeological significance makes it a popular choice with baby boomers and anyone aiming to take something educational from their visit.
