INDONESIAN PRESIDENT SELECTS ‘SUPER PRIORITIES’

Tom Parry, senior reporter

Indonesia (AS1000) is aiming to promote five “super-priority destinations” to delegates during WTM London this year in a bid to reach its target of 20 million international tourists in 2019. The locations – selected by president

Joko Widodo – have been chosen to encourage visitors to explore more of the archipelago’s natural beauty, arts and crafts, music offerings and gastronomic specialisms, and to look at options beyond its popular tourism resort of Bali. Lake Toba, Borobudur, Mandalika,

Labuan Bajo and Likupang have each been selected for promotion. The country’s Ministry of Tourism said

the sites would receive investment to aid their accessibility to foreign visitors – with tourists from Europe, China and India highlighted as key markets. The strategy is a development of Indonesia’s “10 New Bali” initiative operated between 2015-2018, taking five destinations from that list to be focused on further this year. Priority destinations, tourism officials

said, had been chosen on their strengths, with the infrastructure at Lake Toba, for example, being boosted with the presence of Silangit airport. In a similar vein, Borobudur has been

designated a Unesco World Heritage Site, while Mandalika and Likupang have been assigned as special economy zones. President Widodo has also recently announced Labuan Bajo as a “premium destination”. The locations will look to implement sustainable tourism practices, such as the economic empowerment of local communities and a focus on cultural preservation. Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism said it expected all of the country’s national budget to be allocated to the five destinations to boost their infrastructure, amenities, marketing and other “substantial aspects”. Ibu Nia, deputy minister for international

marketing for the Ministry of Tourism, said: “We believe the development of the five super-priority destinations will greatly contribute to Indonesia’s tourism in terms of increasing tourist arrival numbers and enabling more competitive and sustainable tourism.”

Pegasus Airlines (EU1300) is confident its customers are about to see their flying experience get greener having taken delivery of its first Airbus A321neo. The low-cost carrier took delivery of the medium-range, narrow-body aircraft with 239 seats in September. The aircraft was part of an order

Pegasus had made for 100 aircraft from the A320 family back in 2012. Pegasus CEO Mehmet T Nane said the new aircraft are 50% quieter than previous models, emit less carbon annually and are 15% more fuel efficient thanks to improved engines and other design modifications. He added: “As Pegasus Airlines, we

City Gamma, will use 97,000 litres less fuel in 2020 after the works. “City Cruises’ companywide initiative covers all departments to meet the passion of its clients to reduce its footprint,” he said. Operating in London, York and Poole, City Cruises carried a record four million passenger journeys in 2018. It plans to extend its 2019 First Foundations initiative aimed at the Chinese market, which introduced special sailings, tailored food options and preferred Chinese payment options. Plus, City Cruises has

have received our first A321neo, the largest member of the Airbus A320 family, with which we aim to form half of our fleet by 2024.” The aircraft could be assigned to

any one of the airline’s 111 routes, 35 of which are domestic, with the remaining 76 going to international destinations in 42 countries. The airline’s attitude to improvement is also attracting attention after it was selected as a National Winner in the 2019 European Business Awards One to Watch category – it will now compete in the finals in Poland in December.
