CONTEMPORARY CULTURE IN PALM SPRINGS
With two hot hotels and a cultural attraction added to the 2020 Palm Springs portfolio, the Californian city is making a modern move. Madeleine Barber takes a look at the new options
For culture vultures Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza
For cosmopolitan travellers Andaz Palm Springs
For design lovers Welwood Hotel
Tourists heading to Palm Springs in 2020 will have a new destination to add to their itinerary, with the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza due to start welcoming visitors in the second half of the year. The 5.8-acre space has been inspired by the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians and designed to echo tribal traditions such as basket weaving and pottery, and natural landscapes including the Andreas Canyon and the Washingtonia filifera, a native palm tree only found in this part of the world. Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza will
integrate a cultural museum, art gallery, landscaped gardens and the Oasis Trail outdoor walk, which is paired with a “meditation labyrinth”, into the tribe’s ancestral lands. It will also be home to a spa and bathhouse offering treatment rooms, hot-spring pools, tranquillity garden, fitness centre and beauty salon. •

Palm Springs will gain a new hotel in spring 2020 with the launch of Hyatt’s Andaz property, which will be located in the heart of Downtown and provide visitors with easy access to the city’s boutique shops, award-winning restaurants and most popular galleries. It will also offer guests breathtaking panoramic views of the city and neighbouring San Jacinto mountains. The hotel will have 150 rooms and
13 suites but in an usual layout – a collection of small buildings including bungalows will sit with two outdoor pools, verdant gardens and a sun- trap terrace. Andaz Palm Springs will house a comprehensive spa and signature restaurant, and draw from its surrounding neighbourhoods to provide guests with distinctively local experiences and immerse them in the culture of Palm Springs. •

VISIT PALM SPRINGS IS EXHIBITING ON STAND NA440 04.11.2019 WTM OFFICIAL EVENT DAILY 57
This building on the site of Ivy Palm Resort may not be brand new, but when it opens its doors in 2020 as the Welwood Hotel, under the new management and ownership of Oxygen Hospitality, it will be unrecognisable from its predecessor. Inspired by the mid-20th century modernist architecture that Palm Springs is renowned for and branded as “historically hip”, the hotel’s redesign is described as angular and artistic, promising colourful motifs throughout. Renovations of the 100-room,
three-acre property will include new guest rooms and suites, clean palettes of neutral and aqua shades on the walls, and sleek, modern furnishings. A new restaurant and bar along with two remodelled pools complete with cabanas are also planned into the transformation. •
