FINALLY
The Autumn Statement delivered £3billion to the Apprenticeship budget of FE Colleges whom had recently experienced a 28% funding reduction for study programmes. A welcome relief for the FE sector, currently contemplating area reviews and mass amalgamations across the UK. It was also one that initiated the starting pistol for 3million apprenticeships by 2020 and radically reformed the methodology for attracting skills funding from industry affecting just 2% of employers with wage bills in excess of £3million annually. This big step in funding commitment will dovetail with recent developments in Apprenticeship course delivery, known as Trailblazers. It will also greatly assist with the ever widening divide between the ageing workforce in the welding industry, with an average age of 58 and the volume of new starters now required, to service the Nuclear Power Station building programme which is finally beginning to gain traction. Predictions for the New Year are that the UK economy is likely to be adversely
affected by a slowing international economy. There has never been a better time to initiate such major infrastructural projects. The Welding World Board wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
