Throughout this book, in order to consolidate space and to conform to the appeals, I have used the following code: S starboard-tack boat P port-tack boat L leeward boat W windward boat A boat clear ahead B boat clear astern (behind) M middle or intervening boat I
inside boat (at a mark or obstruction) O outside boat (at a mark or obstruction)
When combined, the codes work like this:
SL the boat is on starboard-tack and overlapped to leeward of the other boat.
PI the boat is on port-tack and overlapped on the inside of the other boat.
