Handbells

Handbells

Melissa Emerson is Director of Music Ministries at Calvary United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN.

A Celtic Ring, Susan E. Geschke,

Agape (a division of Hope Publishing Company) 2706, 2015, 3-5 octaves, Level 2. Need something to end the ringing

year with a “bang” or a mart? Here’s a fun arrangement of Holy Manna that utilizes your upper trebles. All battery and bass bells will still have fun with

some martellatos thrown in as the piece gets moving. Te Celtic portion of the song is smoothly incorporated into the familiar hymn tune as an introduction and interlude. If you wanted to add a little extra flavor, throwing in a flute or even a whistle on either the Holy Manna tune or the Celtic portion could add some extra flavor. It also works beautifully just as written.

Journey, Kyle Webber, Ringing Word Publications (a

division of Jeffers Handbell Supply) RW8283, 2021, 3-5 octaves and optional 3-5 octave handchimes, Level 3. Here’s another year-ending piece that wouldn’t be too

difficult to learn before most choirs break in the sum- mer. It’s a fun tune that starts with bass notes ringing the melody. Trebles get their thumbs working with staccato thumb-damps at the beginning with accents. And, of course, treble bells take over the melody once the bass line has laid it out. Ten add the extra layer of 7s and 8s in the treble followed by a counter melody with LV and some mart liſts in the battery bells. Ten, it’s back around to the melody one more time in trebles with bass bells pound- ing away on mallets, and you have the first section of this wonderful “journey.” Te second section is all handchimes if possible. If handchimes are not an option for your choir, be sure to take time to change to a legato technique here to really show off the different effects of a bell. Aſter the chime section, we return to the opening treble bells and thumb dampening with accents. Ten a piu mosso to the end – more motion – and a race to the finish together. Bass bells continue a malleting pattern while treble bells recap the melody. He throws in a few arpeggiated chords at the end and a final measure of marts. Voilá – a “journey” worth exploring!
