Resources & Reviews Choral

Robert P. Anderson is Music Director/ Organist, Jamesville Community Church (United Methodist and Presbyterian U.S.A.), Jamesville, NY.

Go, Go, You Children of God!, William M. Schoenfeld,

GIA Publications G-8954, 2015, two-part and piano with optional two flutes (G-8954INST). Based on Matthew 28:19-20, you may choose wheth-

er you are going to use the word “children” or the word “people.” Tis anthem has many different musical possi- bilities. You can use two flutes and keyboard if you have the instrumentalists available. If you do not have flutists, you can have the flute part played on the organ with the piano. If you do not have those resources available, just use the piano and have the pianist arrange to play both the flute parts and the keyboard (eliminating the flute parts in places). You can have your adult choir sing one part and your children’s choir sing the other, if you have a children’s choir. If you don’t, but have a choir of mixed voices, you can have women sing one part and men sing the other. If you have only women’s voices, you can either have a two- part women’s choir or have all your women sing part one.

God in the Barren Spaces, Kath-

leen M. Basi, World Library Publi- cations (a division of GIA Publica- tions) 009007, 2017, two-part mixed choir and keyboard with optional congregation, C instrument and guitar (part included). Tis is an easily learned two-part

anthem of a great text involving the Trinity you should consider adding to

your choral library. Shelter Me / Protégeme, Michael Joncas, GIA Publi-

cations G-10306, 2020, SAB and keyboard with optional congregation. Optional guitar (G-10306G) and flute and oboe (G-10306INST) parts available. Also available for two-part choir (G-10310). Tis anthem also includes Spanish lyrics written by San- tiago Fernandez. It is based on Psalm 23 but was written to

reflect our time in the COVID-19 pandemic. SAB choral resources are required for this anthem but if you have those available, you are urged to purchase this anthem and sing it while “the way ahead is dark and difficult to see.”

All My Hope on God is Founded,

Nick Klemetson, Augsburg Fortress 978-1-5064-7969-9, 2021, two-part mixed and piano. Te text of this anthem was written

by Joachim Neander (1650-1680) and paraphrased by Robert Bridges (1844-1930), using the tune Nean- der New. Tis is an easily learned, melodic anthem. It is written in verse

form with the first verse having men only sing the melody, followed by women only singing the melody and ending with all voices in unison. Te second verse starts with four measures of women singing the melody accompanied by a very easy men’s part, followed by men on melody alone ending with all voices in unison. Te third verse starts with the men having the melody with women singing the same easy part that the men had in the second verse, followed by an alternation of the melody between men and wom- en, ending again with all voices in unison. Te final verse has men and altos on the melody with sopranos singing a descant.

Te Time of Singing, Anne Krentz Organ, Augsburg

Fortress 978-1-5064-7990-3, 2021, two-part mixed with piano and optional flute (part included). Based on Song of Solomon 2:10-13, this is an appropri-

ate anthem for a Sunday in late spring. “Te time of sing- ing has come … for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone … Te flowers appear on the earth, the vines are in blossom, giving forth fragrance.”

Set Me as a Seal, Aaron Tompson, World Library

Publications (a division of GIA Publications) 008389, 2016, unison or optional two-part choir, keyboard and optional guitar. Te text of this anthem is adapted from Song of Songs

dealing with the love of God. Depending on the choral resources you have available, this anthem can be a unison anthem or if your singers are capable of singing two parts, you can have either two-part women or two-part mixed choir.
