How have you handled your children and youth music ministry?

We started back with children and youth with the beginning of the fall semester. Spacing is maintained and children are masked. Our schedule has been less intense and any pressure for performance in worship has been lessened.

Todd Wilson Germantown UMC, Germantown, TN

Our children were online until the fall. We met in person, but our numbers were down. The youth choir met in person, spread out with masks.

Janice Hinnant Earle Street Baptist Church, Greenville, SC

Our children and youth groups disbanded and we have been unable to regroup. Our attempts at online music for children and youth music were not “well attended.”

Michael Dougherty Hyde Park UMC, Tampa, FL

We are rebuilding. Getting people back onsite and in small groups has been slow.

Douglas Grove-DeJarnett Munsey Memorial UMC, Johnson City, TN

We are hoping to start implementing a small ensemble. Also, they are participating in short but frequent presentations during worship.

Carla Hale Stroud UMC, Stroud, OK

What choral music or other resources have you found helpful?

Music reading sessions with quality two-part music for smaller choirs.

Jan Smith Vale UMC Oakton, VA

I always refer to the Lectionary Guide printed by The Fellowship for suggestions to spark ideas and then to the old Choristers Guild scriptural references listed for their anthems. Sometimes general anthems become necessary. We are a small choir and sing two-part mixed or SAB or anthems which don’t have very much four-part.

Janet Davidson East UMC

Colorado Springs, CO

A large file of music that the choir already knows! Also, a deep dive into the hymnal. We have been using a lot of the hymnal in new and different ways than we did pre-pandemic.

Michael Dougherty Hyde Park UMC Tampa, FL

Two CDs of instrumental versions of public domain hymns, gospel songs, and spirituals that my husband, Dan Damon, recorded. We use them as background music during the announcement slides.

Eileen Johnson El Sobrante UMC El Sobrante, CA

Finale, The Cokesbury Worship Hymnal, The Faith We Sing.

Jim Sheldrake St. Peter’s UMC Wellington, FL

The usual planning resources: Prepare! Worship Planner and, because we borrow often with permission from other denominational resources, Sundays and Seasons (ELCA) and Call to Worship (PCUSA).

Kathryn Johnson St. Stephen UMC Mesquite, TX

We use The United Methodist Hymnal, The Faith We Sing, and Worship & Song, plus our choir has been relying more on anthem books like 10 1/2 Anthems for 10 Singers, and even some downloads from CCLI.

Mary Jane Crail Clear Lake UMC Clear Lake, IA

Growing in Grace children’s choir curriculum.

Rick Wiltse

Aldersgate UMC Grand Rapids, MI

Colleagues and their amazing ideas.

Mary Scifres Santa Clarita UMC Santa Clarita, CA
