during the months aſter Easter, complete with syncopated rhythms and exciting dynamics and articulations, con- sider this one. Te text is based on 1 Kings 18, which is a lectionary reading for the Second Sunday aſter Pentecost on June 19.

Vocal Solos

Jay Regennitter is lead pastor of First United Methodist Church, Robinson, IL, and has degrees in choral music education and organ performance.

7 Psalms and Spiritual Songs for Solo Voice, Mark

Hayes, Alfred (available through Jubilate Music Group) 22067, 2004, medium low voice. Also available medium high voice (22068). Accompaniment/performance CDs for both voices available. As you might imagine, Hayes’ accompaniments sparkle

in each of these settings. I like this collection because it can be used throughout the church year (general praise, Ad- vent, weddings). I’ve found these solos to be accessible for my high school students, and think they would be helpful during the summer months.

Bless His Holy Name: Ten Vocal Solos for the Church

Year, Mark Shepperd, MorningStar Music Publishers MSM-40-301, 2021, medium voice with piano and option- al obbligato instruments. Here is another collection that has taken favorite choral

works and adapted them to solo voice. Te songs are in a medium range and accessible to a variety of vocal abilities. Shepperd creates lovely melodies and piano accompani- ments that lie under the fingers well. Tree pieces include reproducible parts for treble instruments. Tere are a few newly composed pieces, and those originally written for choir may offer some ideas for new anthems. Te original voicing is listed below each song, so you are getting not only a solo, but insight into the choral work, too.

Organ

Robert P. Anderson is Music Director/ Organist, Jamesville Community Church (United Methodist and Presbyterian U.S.A.), Jamesville, NY.

Light Divine: Tree Pentecost Hymn Settings for

Organ, Benjamin Kolodziej, Concordia Publishing House 977956, 2021. Only one of the three hymn settings is a tune found in

Te United Methodist Hymnal (In Babilone). However, the other two tunes – Farley Castle and Song 13 – are well known in other Christian traditions. I would rank the level of difficulty of this collection as medium to difficult.

Hymn Enrichments: Set 2, Te

Church Year, David Schelat, Bir- namwood Publications (a division of MorningStar Music Publishers) MSM- 10-818, 2019. Tere are 14 arrangements of

hymns including introductions and harmonizations of tunes. Eleven of the included tunes are found in Te United

Methodist Hymnal. Tis collection is of medium difficulty level and has hymns appropriate for the Advent, Christ- mas, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost seasons, Christ the King Sunday, and general. Tis music can be used with hymns sung by your congregation and choir, or you could arrange a prelude or postlude by playing an introduction from this collection, the hymn from our hymnal, and then end with the harmonization in this collection. It provides you many opportunities to be creative.

A Stanford Organ Album, Charles

Villiers Stanford, ed. John Scott White- ley, Oxford University Press 978-0- 1935-2993-9, 2021. Tis is a large organ album (more

than 70 pages) that contains notes about the composer and the music contained in the album. Tere are 20 compositions including six original compositions and arrangements for

organ of music originally composed for other resourc- es. Each piece is longer than those reviewed in the previ- ously mentioned Schelat collection, and they are of varying ability requirements. Some are easily learned while others require more technical skills and will require more time to learn. Some are based on hymn tune arrangements while others are not.
