“Dear heart, please stop getting involved in everything. Your job is to pump blood – that’s it!”

Dr Toomas Särev discusses the importance of maintaining a healthy heart and how he can help

We live in an exciting era. Te only certainty is that everything changes. To maintain our ability to cope with all the challenges life throws at us, now more than ever, we need that currency called health. You can be rolling in wealth but the truth is that the material world loses its meaning if you don’t take good care of yourself. If we can keep our bodies in good shape, with a healthy heart and resilient vessels, we become resistant to stress and our minds will thrive, which in turn will boost our mental and phys- ical health and everything around us. “Dear heart, please stop getting

involved in everything. Your job is to pump blood — that’s it!” Tis amazing little pump is capable of pushing around 7,500 litres of blood per day; it only rests for a tiny moment between every systole. To pump effectively, your heart needs the same elements as a motor: fuel supply, mechanics and electrics. My expertise covers all these areas in adult cardiology.

About me I have a busy modern family, a beau- tiful wife, three adult children, two teenagers and two grandchildren — quite a challenge, and my best reason to keep healthy and continue to see them growing. My recent role as the head of the clinic gave me even more challenges.

My journey as a doctor has taken me from Estonia to Finland, Sweden, Sudan and finally, 10 years ago, to the UK. It’s armed me with a holistic approach to health and heart-related matters, putting the emphasis on mind set

It honed my skills as a good listener and a better person. My feelings of being overwhelmed and stress levels sometimes rose over the limit. I have three ways to get me back on track and chill. 1. To cuddle our dog Ginny, she’s a tranquillizer, it works like magic! 2. To hop on my motorbike and take my wife out for breakfast. To feel the wind and vibration, hear the sounds, be in the scene, have full attention. 3. Tis is the most challenging; I’m a black belt in Korean traditional martial arts. Te ultimate way to keep my mind sharp, to empty all stress. It requires full attention and improves balance and clarity in all ways. It gives flexi- bility and endurance, no matter what

I value the authentic, transparent and honest communication between myself and my patients. I’ll find the best way for you if you wish to get professional advice or you have any problems related to chest pains angina, palpitations, rhythm, heart failure or inefficient valves.

your age. On top of all that, the martial art is humbling, teaches respect and discipline, as well as boosting confi- dence and improving empathy. For me, it also brings the Eastern medi- cine closer to the Western one.

My journey as a doctor has been

colourful, to say the least. It has taken me from Estonia to Finland, Sweden, Sudan and finally, 10 years ago, to the UK. Tis journey has armed me with a holistic approach to health and heart-related matters, putting the emphasis on mind set. It’s like computer software, it can still do magic when the hardware is already slightly worn. As an expert, I value the authentic,

transparent and honest communica- tion between myself and my patients. I’m often late with my clinics, because explaining and talking through deli- cate and complex matters requires time and attention. More often, it ends up with life coaching and advice. I’ll help to find the best way for you
