Vein surgery in London

Paul E Herbert is a consultant venous surgeon at Te Whiteley Clinic London

Paul qualified from Charing Cross Hospital an dMedical School (now part of Imperial College London) in 1997. After

training in general,

transplant and vascular surgery, and obtaining a PhD from Imperial College London, he was appointed as a consultant surgeon at the Hammer- smith Hospital in 2012. In addition to his consultant role within the trust, he’s the director of clinical studies for the Hammersmith site and surgical lead for the transplant and access surgical group. He specialises in renal transplantation, vascular access and venous surgery, which he performs at Imperial and Te Whiteley Clinic London. While in training, he saw the evolution of varicose vein surgery

from stripping techniques performed under general anaesthetic to the latest endovascular methods, including laser technologies that allowed for ambulatory (walk in-walk out) treat- ments under local anaesthetic — as he practices now. “I always wanted to do vascular

work, but also transplantation, which I loved from the first time I got involved with it,” says Paul. “My current practice enables me to perform in both of these specialities.

Renal transplantation

changes peoples’ lives, often overnight, and allows them to no longer need dial- ysis and to live independent lives. “At the same time, I had trained in

vascular surgery, and particularly in venous surgery, and was very keen to continue working in this area. Many people struggle with painful, sympto- matic varicose veins and their conse- quences, which

can include Tere’s skin

changes, dry skin and even leg ulcers. All of these are usually treatable with modern techniques.

“Te Whiteley Clinic is a pioneer in venous surgery and continues to be at the forefront of the technology used to treat venous diseases. In addition to laser and microwave treatments, the clinic also has access to the Sonovein, a new, less invasive ultrasound- based method of treating varicose veins”

two day-care operating theatres, an interventional radiology suite and a recovery area. Tere are also clinics in Bristol and Guildford. Te staff carry out high-quality keyhole varicose vein surgery using their own protocol, which stems from decades of research and has culminated in bespoke treat- ment plans for all patients. Te clinic has

seen more than 20,000 mini-

mally invasive (or ‘keyhole’) proce- dures performed following Te Whiteley Protocol. Scans are thorough and performed by a team of dedicated vascular

scientists/sonographers who, together with the consultant surgeon, ensure a complete and personalised treat- ment plan is devised, with the correct underlying cause of the varicose veins being identified. In addition, the clinic is recognised as the leading interna- tional centre for the treatment of pelvic vein reflux (including varicose veins of the vulva and vagina).
