The Omnia ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND
Overlooking Zermatt and with the Matterhorn as its neighbour, The Omnia isn’t short of highlights. All 30 rooms have balconies and the modernist wood-clad interiors are inspired by traditional American mountain lodges. The wellness centre, meanwhile, offers a range of treatments
A serene mountain hideaway, The Omnia is one of Switzerland’s finest hotels. It exudes luxury with spacious, modern rooms, an excellent restaurant and an outstanding spa that shouldn’t be missed. The hotel also has a charming library and a sun terrace, not to mention good access to both shopping and skiing, making it a great year-round destination.
ABOVE THE EVERYDAY Perched on a granite rock 148ft above the roofs of Zermatt, The Omnia is overshadowed only by the iconic Matterhorn, which towers majestically above it. Guests arrive from the village via an underground tunnel before entering an elevator that rises up through the rock to the hotel lobby — located a lofty 5,410ft above sea level. It’s certainly a memorable way to reach an unforgettable destination. A member of Design Hotels, the property
is a cool and contemporary take on the traditional mountain lodge. Here in the Swiss
Alps, the mountain lodge — a quintessentially American concept — has been reinvented in this European environment by the New York- based architect Ali Tayar. While the materials and craftsmanship reflect the tradition of the Valais region, the furnishings are inspired by handcrafted American modernism. Sunlight floods in through supersized glass windows, logs burn in the stone fireplace, and leather couches and custom-made wooden furniture echo the Alpine surroundings. For a better view of the Matterhorn’s jutting
peaks, guests can head outdoors and linger over coffee on the south-facing sundeck. All the hotel’s 30 rooms — including 12
elegant suites — open out onto balconies offering breathtaking views of the snow-dusted peaks. The most luxurious suites come with a telescope, sauna, living room and fireplace. All rooms and suites include a minibar, complimentary wireless LAN internet access, LCD screen TV, a sound system, safe and
telephone. DVD players, movies and music are available upon request.
FINE DINING The Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant is led by executive chef Hauke Pohl, who creates contemporary meals using the fresh local produce. Clear flavours distinguish his seasonal dishes, which can be enjoyed on the sun terrace, in the lobby, the boardroom, or in guests’ rooms. After dinner, guests can lounge and catch up in front of the fire and sip espresso and grappa.
FEEL WELL The wellness centre is equipped with a modern indoor/outdoor pool, allowing swimmers to dive under a glass partition and float in the fresh air. There are massage jets in the open-air heated pool, plus a whirlpool, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, caldarium and flower-scented steam room. After an intensive day hiking, biking or perhaps skiing, a tension-busting mix of
massages will relieve sore limbs: everything from hot and cold stone, sports and foot reflexolog to the Hawaiian lomi lomi, Thai and herbal compress are on the spa menu.
ACTIVE IN SUMMER AND WINTER The idyllic village of Zermatt lies at the foot of the Matterhorn and is surrounded by no fewer than 38 peaks higher than 13,000ft. At an altitude of 5,000ft above sea level, the resort town lies in southwestern Switzerland, in the German-speaking portion of the canton of Valais. This traditional winter sports resort, with its international ambience, has always been a car-free zone — a place where visitors get around by foot, by horse-drawn sleigh or by electric car. Zermatt is Switzerland’s southernmost resort and is famous for its pleasant climate and clear, dry air. Thanks to guaranteed snowfall each year,
the winter season in Zermatt begins in mid- November and continues right through to the beginning of May. Around 185 miles of prepared
runs can be reached from three starting points through a network of 70 tramways, chairlifts and ski lifts. Some of Zermatt’s unique features include its downhill runs across the international border into Italy and its breathtaking views of the Alps. An amusement park, helicopter skiing, ski tours with or without a mountain guide, ski safaris and ski tests complete the programme. In the summer, Zermatt’s adventure and
themed hiking trails, with their spectacular panoramic views, the new Swiss Nordic Park for Nordic walkers and a glacier garden provide plenty of opportunities for exercise. Golfers will enjoy the Golf Club Matterhorn’s courses at 4,500ft above sea level on a 50-acre course perched in the valleys. In addition to several excellent ski restaurants,
Zermatt has much to offer on the culinary front. There’s everything fromrösti, raclette, sushi and grilled steak available in the resort town. Zermatt’s restaurants, hotels and bars have something to offer for every taste.
Don’t miss After a day’s skiing or hiking, soothe aching muscles in the al-fresco whirlpool bath overlooking the formidable Matterhorn
