6 Te Modern Family Education & schooling Digital learning trends

Pencils, paper and blackboards are so last century. We take a look at the top digital trends transforming the educational sector. Words: Helen Warwick

Augmented reality First there was video. Soon there will be virtual reality. Video remains an incredibly helpful learning tool, but look to augmented reality and from your classroom you could steam back to the battlefields of the Somme during history, take an art class in a corner of the Louvre, fly over Victoria Falls for a lesson in geography and bring a swirling tornado before the eyes of awestruck students. On the market, there’s already Google Expeditions — a forward-thinking app that brings more than 900 virtual adventures into the classroom.

Personalised learning Old fashioned one-size-fits-all teaching methods may soon be redundant in the modern classroom. We all learn at different speeds, so it makes sense we’ll gradually switch to a more personalised learning programme in the future. How will that look in the classroom? Blending learning is the new buzzword, combining face-to-face learning with online activities, teachers can individually hone a learning programme to each and every student, all the while collecting data behind the scenes on their capabilities and academic level.

Internet of Things Connecting up classrooms with the Internet of Tings (IOT) is inevitable. Tere are the comfort credentials: from smart cameras for security to climate control and smart lighting systems. Ten there are systems to track students’ progress. Imagine a tool that records when homework is completed and how long it took the student to finish, adding a line of communication to parents to let them know test scores and alert them to issues of concern.

Transformed classrooms Pimping up cluttered classrooms will soon be the new norm. Te centuries-old design with the teacher lording over students in neat rows of desks isn’t going to do the trick for modern-day movers and shakers. Education is shifting from a lecturing teacher and a hushed crowd of kids, to a more immersive model and classrooms need to cater to this. Tere needs to be lots of natural light, plenty of room to move about, ergonomic tables and chairs, interactive displays and personal computers. Get it right, and studies have revealed that classroom design can alter a student’s progression by 25%.

Computational thinking Expect to see the growth of computational thinking in all subjects across the curriculum. What does it mean? It’s a problem-solving approach, a bit like a computer, mapping out problems and breaking them down into smaller parts before analysing them and looking at the bigger picture. And it’s thought employers of the future will be looking for a thorough understanding of computational thinking — a coding term that’s been doing the rounds for decades but one that’ll be a mandatory skill for our kids.
