28 Te Modern Family Travel - weddings & honeymoons
Destination weddings I
t’s safe to say UK weddings don’t come cheap. Various surveys published this year put the average spend at between
£17,500 and £32,000. Compare that to destination weddings, which typically come in at under £10,000, and it’s little wonder the number of UK couples tying the knot abroad is growing. According to tourism company
Kuoni, the average cost of a wedding abroad is just £7,500 — although these tend to cater to fewer guests, sometimes as few as 10. Here are three top tropical
destinations for couples seeking to tie the knot against a backdrop of sun, sand and swaying palms .
Mauritius “A pioneer of the barefoot luxury trend,” is how weddings executive Samantha Brooker describes the Indian Ocean nation. “It’s still a firm favourite for weddings, honeymoons, families and couples,”she adds. “New investment for 2019 and beyond should keep it safely in the top five.” A dead cert for year-round
sunshine, there are a plethora of hotels and venues to choose from, with low-budget packages almost always including a dedicated wedding planner, although some have a minimum-stay requirement.

Maldives “Te Maldives delivers a level of luxury that was unheard of a generation ago,” says Samantha. Te destination also looks set for continued growth, with a 10.2% increase in UK visitor numbers last year, 20 new properties due to open over the next two years, and a second runway on Male scheduled to open later this year. Samantha adds that the Maldives is also the top spot for LGBT honeymooners. While the weather fluctuates
and marine life can vary month on month, temperatures stay high. Eco-conscious couples will be happy to know plastic straws are on the way out across many of the Maldivian islands, to be replaced with paper ones or edible versions. Made from sugar and corn starch, the gluten-free

straws can withstand an hour submerged in liquid — enough time for even the most leisurely of us to down a cocktail.
Antigua Tere are so many beaches on this Caribbean island you could visit a different one every day of the year, and you’re likely to get sunshine every day too. Yachts drifting across the horizon create an incredible backdrop, or a good place to party. Despite its high-end reputation — due in no small part to celebrities residents such as Oprah Winfrey and Eric Clapton — it caters equally well to those on a more modest budget. Antigua is quite dry and humidity
levels are lower than its neighbours, but it may be a good idea to steer clear of hurricane season from June to November.
