NHEHS — inspiring academic excellence in girls since 1873
Notting Hill & Ealing High School (NHEHS), with just over 900 students aged four to 18, has a history of providing an academically ambitious education
A
s one of the first schools of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the largest network of
independent girls’ schools in the UK, NHEHS combines academic rigour with unrivalled pastoral support. Staying true to its founding aim of providing girls with the same opportunities as their male counterparts, NHEHS is traditional in terms of ambitiously high academic standards and modern in the way it prepares girls for leader- ship and success beyond school. every girl can find her voice and that it doesn’t only have to be the extroverts who stand up and present their views and ideas. Similarly, all girls should leave the school knowing how to make things happen and having had expe- rience of leading projects, which have included organising everything from medical confer-
explains more: “Visitors are always struck by our warm and inclusive community, but also by our relent- less ambition for girls. We want girls to enjoy every opportunity to find their passions in life: we have more than
150 extracurricular activi-
ties each week, as well as outward- looking opportunities such as an Erasmus scheme, industry links, the wider participation in our GDST family of schools, and a network of overseas links. At a time of increased nationalism and interna- tional tension, it’s essential through such links to broaden young minds and increase collaboration.”
ences to fashion shows. Learning to think independently
starts in the Junior School with ‘open homework’ — a hugely popular concept where girls independently research, produce and present a project from an open brief, for example ‘Time’. Debating and public speaking is
firmly embedded across the school, with regular staff-student debates. It believes that, at a time of ‘safe spaces’, no platforming and social media echo chambers, it’s vital that the girls should listen to, inhabit and represent views they might find uncomfortable and see their teachers doing the same. In order that every girl learns lead- ership, all girls in the sixth form are
encouraged to take on roles as subject representatives and to take the initia- tive in these roles. NHEHS is optimistic about the
future, preparing its students with the ability to lead, speak confidently and be technically adept while at the same time remaining creative. In short, giving its students the skills they need for life.
