Future proofing students in a changing landscape S
Headmistress of Sydenham High School GDST, Katharine Woodcock, discusses the Sixth Form
ixth Form is a key period of academic, social and emotional development. Young people are
growing up in a world where they feel under enormous pressure; academ- ically as well as
socially, particu-
larly given the online culture they’re surrounded by. In a landscape where the only certainty is change, young people must be future proofed, gaining not only skills and knowledge but an inner confidence for informed decision making and adaptability, in conjunction with a social conscience and awareness of the world around them. Where previously schools focused on examination results, educating young adults now requires a fine
balance between focusing on developing a passion for their
subjects, but also a curiosity for, and the strength of character to deal with, the working world beyond. Maintaining levels of confidence
in girls from the age of 14 upwards is vital in order to reduce the well- known ‘confidence gap’ in teenage girls.

self-assurance and self-belief to thrive at university and in the world of work, as well as in life. With the McKinsey Global Institute
announcing that by 2030 artificial intelligence technology will have displaced up to one fifth of the global workforce, it’s key to prepare our students with the skills to set them apart. Alongside A Level studies, at Sydenham High Sixth Form the Extended Project Qualification and bespoke Active Citizen Programme enrich girls’ learning by fostering critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and social development, while the school’s Professional Skills Programme provides all Year 12 students with specialist training in corporate communication, matching each student with a professional ‘mentor’ while completing a self-di- rected project in order to build on and
develop their work skills. We’re educating our young
women not only for further educa- tion and careers, but to be valuable and responsible citizens. Of course academic results matter, and we were delighted to see our students achieve the school’s highest set of results this summer, but it’s the education of the whole girl that creates a young person who’s ready to take on the challenges of further education and or the leap into employment. “I couldn’t have asked for a better
atmosphere and environment. It served both the healthy pressure we needed, but was also a place where

said one former pupil. A key component of Sixth Form life
is ensuring that all our sixth formers become curious, considerate and fear- less, role models and leaders to the lower years and leave us ambitious and confident about their futures.
