Education & schooling Te Modern Family 17 Wellbeing: is boarding the answer?

Jo Cameron, principal of Queenswood School in Hertfordshire, argues that boarding schools are particularly well placed to help teenagers maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle

Q: How can boarding schools help young people to stay healthy? A: Tere’s a direct correlation between a lack of physical activity, poorer mental health and lower aspirations among

teenagers, and one recent

study suggests that by the age of 14, girls are twice as likely as boys to drop sport altogether. But at boarding school, pupils continue to enjoy being active throughout their education, with a hugely positive impact on their self-esteem as well as their academic results. And the range of co-curricular opportunities on offer at boarding schools, which are sadly under threat in many state schools, helps pupils to broaden their horizons and to relieve some of the pressure of exams.

Q: Can boarding really help to reduce stress? A: Increasingly, boarding schools are taking a flexible approach to suit the needs of modern working families. Pupils can choose to board for a few nights a week, allowing them to take part in those vital co-curricular activ- ities well into the evening, and easing the stressful burden of the daily school run for parents.

Q: Does technology pose a threat to wellbeing? A: Young people face unprecedented pressures from social media, and schools have an important part to

play in helping children develop a healthy relationship with technology. Here at Queenswood, mobile phones are allowed at certain times of the school day, but we’ve introduced initi- atives for boarders such as ‘No Tech Tuesdays’, and the girls have really embraced the challenge.

Q: How do boarders develop social skills? A: Boarding teaches pupils to be self-reliant, independent and respon- sible, and to mix with people from all over the world. At the same time, the level of pastoral care is exceptionally high. At Queenswood,

for example,

there are so many adults on hand to help girls negotiate those challenging teenage years — Houseparents, heads of House and heads of year, nurses, a residential school counselor, the school Chaplain. Tere’s always someone to turn to.

Our educational offering will not be solely academic, but will encompass life skills outside the classroom with the aim of preparing our pupils for beyond education. This will include career awareness, an understanding of money, finance and budgeting, a sense of community and a knowledge of their rights and responsibilities within society. Through our life skills programme, we intend not only to raise awareness in these areas but to create a culture of empathy, resilience, communication and collaboration to ensure our pupils flourish and fulfil their future aspirations.

A keen sense of how extraordinarily lucky they are is something that we foster in all our pupils at Broomwood Hall and Northcote Lodge, and that will continue at NorthWood Senior. Philanthropy has always formed a central part of what we do. Over £1.5m has been raised since 1984, and in recent years we have started our own charity, NAEF (Northwood African Education Foundation) which has set up and runs a school in Ethiopia. St George’s School, in the province of Gondar, currently educates 400 children aged 5-12 to the same standard as our schools in London, completely free of charge.

As well as building and sustaining a long-term relationship with children in Ethiopia via NAEF, our schools also support a range of local charities.

Our pupils get actively involved in fundraising, and the sense that they are directly helping those who are much less fortunate than themselves is of inestimable value.
