By the time you read this we'll be about to cast our votes in the general election. Prime Minister May is treating a positive result for her government as a mandate for its direction on Brexit. Whoever wins, it’s incredibly important that they take on board the priorities for the travel industry, which we’ve set out in our ‘Making a Success of Brexit for Travel and Tourism’ report. I know that the result of the election and its impact on Brexit will be a hot topic for debate at the ABTA Travel Mat ers conference later this month, where I’ll be speaking with, among others, the CEO of Thomas Cook Group, Peter Frankhauser, plus journalist and broadcaster Andrew Pierce, whose idiosyncratic and informed insights into the political landscape will be fascinating to hear.

It would be fair to say that April wasn’t a good month for United Airlines. Only time will tell just how signifi cant the damage to its reputation and business will be following its ill-judged decision to manhandle a passenger off one of its fl ights. United may argue, as it did initially, that the gentleman overreacted and that its staff only acted the way they did to get emergency fl ight crew to a destination — to prevent a whole plane load of passengers being inconvenienced. But in this age of social media and smart phones — and traditional media increasingly looking to these same sources for stories, all of us need to consider how our actions might be interpreted. Otherwise it can be frightening just how quickly a situation can spiral out of control.
