Find the perfect wilderness experience in Africa, from big cats crossing the savannah to gorillas in the mist
T
hink of Africa and it’s nature that springs to mind. This is the continent that travellers head for to see animals in the wilderness,
and it’s the variety of both landscapes and creatures that really astonishes. The Kruger in South Africa and the Maasai Mara in Tanzania are amongst the most classic safari experiences, with their terrific variety of big cats, wildebeest, zebra, elephants and hippos. Spot gorillas in Gabon’s Loango National Park, or in the highlands of Rwanda. Across the border, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is also a hotspot for these majestic apes. Lemurs are the big draw in Madagascar, but
the island is a veritable floating zoo, full of weird and wonderful creatures. Southern Africa also has many marvels: Boulders Beach in Cape Town is famous (and rightly so) for its penguins, while several nearby seaside resorts on the Cape offer whale-watching adventures or scary shark cage dips for those who are brave enough. Namibia is another country with a growing number of wildlife hotspots, such as Etosha National Park: look out for leopards and cheetahs. It’s impossible to condense an entire continent
into a few pages, but for those trying to find the perfect wildlife experience, we’ll guide you through some of the best of what’s on offer.
