It’s essential to travel responsibly. Considering the environmental and social impact of where you go and how you get there, where you stay and what you do when you’re there is vital, but can be diffi cult. The travel industry should, and does, help. ABTA’s Travelife programme is an excellent example: an international sustainability certifi cation programme that helps members improve their social, environmental and economic impacts. Hotel members that meet the sustainability criteria can then use the certifi cation mark to promote their sustainability to consumers — a quick and easy way to see if the place you’d like to stay meets certain standards. Tourism can have a huge

impact on animal welfare. With global wildlife declining at an alarming rate, we must protect the habitats that still exist. ABTA has led the way, drawing up detailed guidelines for tour operators that have helped to transform local practices. Our in-depth special report, from p25, takes a look at how the guidelines are helping, along with interesting case studies from some of travel’s biggest names. Africa is a key destination for

those interested in wildlife; our guide to wild Africa, from p57, is a reminder of what’s at stake when travelling responsibly.
