Counter terrorism awareness training

ABTA has been working with the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) to offer training in awareness of different kinds of terror threats and how best to deal with them in the event of an atack. An introduction to the NaCTSO training programme has been rolled out across the country at the latest round of regional meetings. This introduction outlines the various modules available within Project Griffin (the national counter terrorism awareness initiative for businesses) and the international training programme provides an overview of the general terrorism threat to British nationals, as well as explaining how the FCO describes terrorism threats within travel advice and how best to act if caught up in an atack, whether in the UK or overseas. As part of the second phase of the roll out, the ABTA

“The course will help empower

businesses and staff to know what

to do in the event of an incident”

destinations and sustainability team, who have been trained by NaCTSO, will deliver more in-depth training seminars to members and incorporate the module into ABTA’s health and safety programmes and initiatives delivered to overseas suppliers. Delegates from Member organisations can atend a half-day training session with the team, and will be provided with presentation materials which can be used to train within their own organisations, and to train suppliers as well. Nikki White, ABTA’s director of destinations and

sustainability, commented, “Although the likelihood of being caught up in a terrorist atack remains small, ensuring that your business and your suppliers have good contingency plans in place, and that staff are briefed on the actions to take, could help minimise risk. The NaCTSO course will help empower businesses, and your staff, to know what to do in the event of an incident, and I would strongly recommend that you or a member of your staff atend and pass on your learnings to the rest of your team.”

ABTA says feedback from Members about the training has been very

positive, with most saying that it empowers staff and provides a degree of reassurance in difficult times. Members who are interested in atending a free half-day training course

can register their interest by emailing destinations@abta.co.uk with the name of their organisation, ABTA number, and the name of the delegate who will atend; dates and venues will then be advised once the place has been confirmed.
