Many think they know Australia — sometimes before they’ve even been. But once you’ve seen Sydney and its sights, the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and the wine regions, you’ve only really just started. Maybe you know Melbourne, Perth and the Red Centre? Perhaps you’ve been up to Broome, the Kimberley and the Top End? I’ve done all of these and still feel like I barely know it. Appealing as its cities
are, it’s the great outdoors where Australia really excels — in particular, its 16,000 miles of coastline. From rugged cliff s and world-class surf to white-sand beaches and rainforest-fringed towns, it’s one enormous adventure playground. In this issue, we head Down Under and and explore the spectacular attractions
that exist just beyond the places you already know. There’s the multi-day trek on the Great Ocean Walk, which bumps alongside its more famous counterpart, the Great Ocean Road, in the state of Victoria. There’s Sydney’s urban attractions — foraging along the seashore, kayaking through the harbour and delving into its Aboriginal history. We also take a look at the endangered pine trees of Tasmania, the marine biologists protecting the Great Barrier Reef, the custodians off ering guided mangrove tours in Broome and some of the epic hikes through Australian landscapes that could be nowhere else on Earth. Just getting there is an adventure in itself — but there are so many more to be had once you arrive.
