Q Jack bouldering at St Bees.
12, Penistone, Sheffield
ack, who has been climbing his whole life, mostly outdoors on Peak gritstone with his family, has bouldered 7A and led trad climbs up to E2 6a. When he first entered a climbing competition, with little experience of indoor climbing, he found it terrifying! Jack has now onsighted V8 and 8a indoors. He particularly loves volumes, dynos (the more running and coordination involved, the better!) and making up problems with his mates.

Sum up climbing in three words: Really, REALLY cool! If I hadn’t discovered climbing I’d be… Competing in snowboard cross.
The best thing to happen to me in the last year was...
Bouldering at the Arco Rock Juniors. The boulders were just so hard and interesting. I was really happy when I topped them all and found out I was the highest placed boy for my age.
Fave possessions…
My climbing shoes, my tent (because climbing and camping go together perfectly) and my super spotty trousers.
I’m inspired by...
Sean McColl. He’s ace at lead, speed, boulder and dynos.
The hardest route I climbed this year was…
Soloing Nicotine Stain E1 6b (Burbage North). After doing the crux part way up, I found the top-out was sopping wet, slimy and green.
Other people probably see me as…
Really, really excitable as I just can’t stay still when there’s volumes and cool climbs around. I was buzzing when I saw the dynos at the top of the routes at the BMC Youth Open competition last February!
I was most scared when…
Leading Eliminator (HVS) at Stanage. For a 10-year-old boy, the moves between those slopey breaks are massive! I had to dyno for the break with a full rack of gear, and my last placement felt a long way away.
I’d like to learn how to...
Multi-pitch with my sister. The first time we tried it was in Wales and we got the ropes in such a terrible mess of knots that we were on a belay ledge for at least an hour in the burning hot sun. The next time we messed up the rope-work again and then couldn’t find the anchors up at the top!
Most people don’t know this but…
I got scouted for Barnsley junior football club at age 5 — apparently I was once good at the sport!
My goal in life is… To live in a van and climb. I just LOVE climbing!
