climbing centres: become a supporter of British Competition Climbing

Calling all I

t’s an exciting time: popularity and participation of indoor climbing is booming, marching hand-in-chalk-bag with the exponential growth of climbing walls across the UK. These factors, in turn, are fuelling the number of people watching British competition climbing, which will undoubtedly receive a further boost in the run up to seeing climbing enter the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

But while there is some funding available for specific individual athletes, there is very little for national talent-development programmes, competition programmes, or national team expenses. These are crucial for providing the long-term pathways toward GB athletes finding success in the international arena. To enable climbing centres to help with funding and show their support for the national team, the BMC is re-launching our Gold, Silver, and Bronze, award scheme.

Zoe Spriggins, BMC competitions programme manager, said: “There's no better time to support the GB Climbing Team than in the run up to the 2020 Olympic Games. With the UK's network of over 360 climbing walls, if even a handful of them sign up to the scheme it will generate a huge boost to what we can provide the Team in terms of support, tools for training, and our ability to better prepare them for international events. And if all the walls joined the scheme, we'd have funding for years to come!”

BMC Student Safety and Good Practice Seminar

T

he BMC Student Safety and Good Practice Seminar is a must if you're involved in running a student climbing, hill walking or mountaineering club. This year, the seminar will be held at Plas y Brenin in North Wales on the weekend of 13-14 October. Student clubs are invited to send a maximum of two representatives who are involved in running the club, and are active walkers and/or climbers. This event gives university club members the opportunity to improve their club practices and ensure safer enjoyment of our cliffs and mountains. The weekend comprises a mixture of lectures, discussions and practical workshops.

10 | CLIMB. WALK. JOIN.

This popular training event is returning this year over the weekend of 8-9 September at Plas y Brenin in Snowdonia. It’s aimed at the experienced members of affiliated clubs that support less experienced members whilst they gain experience, develop skills, and become competent climbers, walkers and mountaineers in their own right.
