quit fl ying. Amid this good news came word that an American ship, the Nanuk, was ice-bound off the coast of Siberia. Fifteen passengers and a million dollars’ worth of furs ready for market were stranded. A rescue fee of $50,000 was off ered to those who could transport food and other supplies. It was an opportunity Eielson could not resist. With his mechanic Earl Borland, Eielson fl ew his supply-laden Hamilton aircraft to the Nanuk then returned to Fairbanks. Impossible fl ying weather kept them grounded for days. Their next rescue fl ight departed for the Nanuk on November 9, 1929. When they did not arrive, an immediate search began by Native American sled teams and volunteer pilots from the U.S., Canada, and Russia. Some pilots fl ew open cockpit planes through

treacherous winter storms bundled in pounds of protective clothing. The search continued through to February of 1930 when Eielson and Borland were found under frozen snow near the wreck of the Hamilton. There is no doubt that journalist Frank Byerley was personally saddened by the death of a fellow aviator who earned worldwide admiration and much personal aff ection. Byerley’s long career in journalism included fl ying to report news and take aerial photographs from an autogiro owned by the Detroit News between 1931 and 1933. At the end of his long life, Byerley remained a favorite son of the south, and an airport (0M8) is named for him at Lake Providence, Louisiana. I began looking for pilots who

Thanksgiving Day within its inclusive dates of 1925 to 1936. The fi rst entry in the alphabetical index was Frank Byerley. Purely by chance, I had uncovered an obscure aviator who led me to the famous Ben Eielson and his mechanic Earl Borland, who did not make it home for Thanksgiving in 1929.
