LEADERSHIP: THE HEAD AND SHOULDERS OF THE COMPANY OR DO YOU FEEL THE DETAILS WEIGHING YOU DOWN?

ARE YOU LOOKING UP AND LONG-TERM,

FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, I HAVE TAKEN AN ESSENTIAL PART OF YOUR ROLE AS DIRECTOR AND BREAK IT DOWN, LETTER BY LETTER, TRAIT BY TRAIT. WE BEGAN WITH CHARACTER, AND LAST YEAR WAS CHANGED. THIS TIME LET’S REVIEW WHAT IS INVOLVED IN LEADERSHIP – BOTH EFFECTIVE AND INEFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP.

Leadership — one of the common

buzzwords people toss around — can be and usually is associated with everything from the perceived direction the company or department is taking to the dis-repaired parking lot. ‘Leadership’ can be said dripping with disdain when it is associated with blame; it can be said positively and proudly when talking about a specific person. Toxic leaders, bad leaders, ineffective leaders, wish- I-could-quit-because-of-my-boss leaders. how many times have we heard our boss referred to in that manner? Key point: ‘boss’ is not necessarily the same as ‘leader.’ A boss can be a leader, or a boss can be a manager (see differences later in this article). A leader may not necessarily be your boss as a leader can be formal (with the title) or informal (without the title).

You can do it horizontally, or horizontal with fish-bones:

One debate that has gone on for decades, and will continue to be argued (both academically and more casually), is ‘are leaders born or made?’ Is it nature that provides us leaders that we want to follow, or must individuals learn how to be in that group? A plethora of examples can be provided by and for both sides…after all who does not have a ‘boss story?’ I know I left a great job because of my (toxic) boss. I still remember how he ignored me, gave no acknowledgements to my contributions to the project (despite the client’s extreme delight with my work) and rarely spoke to me. Overall, more than 40 people that directly reported to him left because of his self-serving and selfish actions. What has not been openly discussed very often, at least in the non-academic realm, is an objective

and research-based combination of personal experiences, reflections and actions that in varying degrees make up an effective leader – defined here as one that others will willingly follow and support.

TAKE A MOMENT TO REFLECT Before we delve into leadership (like what we did with CHARACTER and CHANGED), I’d like you to first do some reflecting. Take a few moments and draw (or diagram) your major life’s events; those that influenced your thinking and your behaviors. It could be your first job, serving in the military, your marriage, family births and/or deaths, promotions (and demotions or firings), etc. Any of your life’s events that you can identify that changed your thought patterns.
