Ahead of his keynote speech at the British Tourism & Travel Show, Max Sinclair – founder of Eco Companion – bangs the drum for volunteer tourism in the UK

eirdre Wells, UKinbound chief executive, summed up the Brexit situation in pithy

fashion during the association’s convention. She said tourism will do well as an industry – but whether we do as well as we could have done, without Brexit, is another matter. It’s just over a year until the UK leaves the European Union – at 11pm on March 29, 2019, to be precise.

While politicians wrangle with negotiations, tourism professionals have to soldier on with recruiting staff and planning holidays for 2019. Despite this lack of certainty, tourism firms and organisations are resolutely forging ahead, with innovative ideas for attracting visitors. Two new projects have secured money from the Discover England Fund to develop bookable itineraries (p6) while VisitBritain is giving travellers around the world exciting reasons to come to our shores. Even prime minister Theresa May commended inbound tourism during her trade mission to China (p7).

English Heritage is investing in its sites to woo more Brits and overseas visitors – and Windsor is on a winner with not just one, but two royal weddings this year.

With this in mind, it will be thought-provoking to hear from speakers and delegates at the British Tourism & Travel Show as we hurtle towards Brexit. Our BTTS coverage this month includes a comment from keynote speaker, Max Sinclair, who will be discussing eco-tourism – and we have a further six pages outlining what to expect at the NEC.
