a side show to more-pressing concerns: the growing tariff war between the US and China, the slowdown in Germany, the developing financial crises in Argentina and other ‘emerging’ economies, the fires in the Amazon, the growing confrontation in Hong Kong. Taken together, these factors suggest a global economic downturn may be unavoidable. Ten years on from the recession which followed the financial crash of 2008, a downturn would hardly be remarkable. It could be said to be overdue, having been kept at bay largely by central banks. The impact on travel of that last recession


is worth restating. The UK saw a 20% decline in overseas trips between 2008 and 2010, with the market only approaching its former level in 2015. THE US and China are the leading non-European source markets for travel to Europe. Chinese visitors show a marked preference for Italy (Figure 14). US visitors favour Italy, the UK and France (Figure 13). Users’ preference for accessing the internet by smartphone over other devices is not so clear when looked at by age (Figure 15)
