JANUARY


Shearings Holidays produced its largest selection of holidays by air and 11 new coach itineraries in its second-edition Europe brochure. The 21 new Go By Air holidays included Bulgaria, Russia, Madeira, Scandinavia and Iceland, never previously featured by the operator. Bourne Leisure, parent of Butlin’s,


Haven and Warner Leisure Hotels, said the year had started strongly thanks to the growing popularity of domestic breaks. January sales were up 3.2% year on year.


FEBRUARY


The Worldwide Travel Report by Kuoni revealed nervousness around Brexit was “one of the biggest conversations” among holidaymakers and predicted a switch from short-haul to long-haul bookings. Domestic tourism looked set to benefit, as the Isle of Man tourist board joined forces with Premier Holidays to promote shoulder- season breaks, while non-eurozone destinations Egypt and Tunisia were reintroduced by Kirker Holidays.


MARCH


The trade reported a drop in demand for European summer holidays due to Brexit uncertainty and admitted the short-haul market was under pressure, with clients booking further ahead and turning to long-haul holidays instead. Jet2holidays said the market was “aggressive” and increased its promotional activity. It said agents needed to be more proactive to get


bookings and provide clients with more reassurances. Classic Collection began the roll-out


of Classic Package Holidays, an online agent-only booking portal, following its acquisition by On the Beach in 2018.


APRIL


Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said forward summer bookings continued to reflect “some consumer uncertainty”. Tui UK increased capacity to Turkey,


with 45,000 extra seats for summer 2020 as part of a wider expansion. Other destinations bolstered included Croatia, Greece, Italy, mainland Spain, the Balearics and Canary Islands. The operator slashed £100 off hundreds of thousands of packages across Europe to promote last-minute sales.


MAY
