Three awards recognise the individuals and companies that have made a special contribution to travel

Everyone who takes home a Globe Travel Award is special – they’ve worked hard, delivered over and above expectations, and have earned the loyalty of their customers and colleagues.

Yet some awards aren’t just

about what you achieve, but about how you get there. Three special awards recognise the unique contributions of individuals or companies that have been bold enough to offer a better way of doing business – whether that is by taking their company to new heights, coming up with an innovative solution to a problem, or simply taking the time to show the human side of the travel industry.

THE PENNY AKAM UNSUNG HERO AWARD

This award, sponsored by Affordable Car Hire, is one that remains very close to our hearts. Named in memory of Travel Weekly staff member Penny Akam, it recognises an individual who has gone out of their way to make the world of travel a better place. Last year’s winner, Alexandra Turner-Davis of Hays Travel, who was just 19 at the time, is not just a rising star of the travel world – having won internal awards and been named the company’s apprentice ambassador – but also a force of nature in the charity world. She was diagnosed with a rare form of throat cancer in 2014 and given just months to live, but she fought back, raising more than £50,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust during the course of her treatment.

Now in remission, she has set up her

own charity to support young people and their families in dealing with cancer. If you think one of your colleagues or contacts is a deserving candidate for

the Unsung Hero Award, please email maisie.meehan@jacobsmediagroup. com, including reasons why you think they deserve to win, by December 11.

INNOVATION IN TRAVEL

It takes a certain sort of vision to look at something and imagine how to make it better – whether that’s streamlining a booking channel, coming up with a technological solution to a problem or finding a way to smooth out the bumps in a business process. Yet without those entrepreneurial types, we’d all still be handwriting letters and issuing flight tickets on paper.

The Innovation in Travel award, sponsored by Travelport, celebrates those people in our industry who dare to think outside the box and question the way we do things. Our most recent winner was bd4travel, which improved the travel shopping experience using artificial intelligence to enhance personalisation and, according to judges, had a clear impact on its clients’ bottom line. Individuals or companies can be nominated or put themselves forward for this award, provided they are based in the UK. Innovations need a proven track record of success, but don't have to be in the field of technology. To nominate for

this award, email maisie.meehan@ jacobsmediagroup.com by December 11.
