Celebrity Cruises invited agents on a sneak-peek tour of new Galapagos-dedicated vessel, Celebrity Flora, in the Netherlands ahead of its launch later in the summer. In the same month, Royal cancelled Independence of the Seas’ ex-UK 2020 season and announced it would reposition the vessel to the US to meet demand for Perfect Day in CocoCay. The line rebutted suggestions that concerns about the future of the UK cruise industry amid continuing uncertainty over Brexit had played a part in the decision. A-Rosa River Cruises expanded its
sales team with two appointments and opened its first UK office, while Fred Olsen Cruises announced plans to host 375 agents on 10 ship visits around the UK between May and November. MSC Cruises, meanwhile, unveiled
Celebrity Flora
proved problematic for a string of lines, including Oceania, Virgin Voyages, NCL and Royal.

Clia revealed that the number of river cruises taken by British and Irish passengers reached a record level in 2018 – increasing by 10.4% to 232,000, – although the rate of growth had slowed. But the cruise industry was forced to defend its safety record after collisions involving ocean and river cruise ships in Europe. Meanwhile, in the ocean sector, the

Closer to home, Saga launched its first new-build vessel – 999-berth Spirit of Discovery – in Dover. The over-50s specialist hosted 700 agents on a two-day preview sailing before the godmother, the Duchess of Cornwall, christened the ship. AmaWaterways christened Europe’s biggest river vessel, AmaMagna, in Austria. The 22-metre-wide ship, which can carry 196 passengers, was helping to switch ocean passengers to the river sector, the line said.
AUGUST
Scenic Eclipse, billed as the ‘world’s first discovery yacht’, finally launched after several delays and a group of 25 UK agents were invited to see the ship in Rotterdam. It was later named by British actress and godmother Dame Helen Mirren in New York in September. Luxury French line Ponant announced it was to buy Paul Gauguin Cruises, while Disney Cruise Line unveiled the name of its new cruise ship, Disney Wish.
