Hire a car as it gives you full freedom to explore this stunning region of Italy at your own pace.


Visit the famous trulli houses of Alberobello. It is a bit touristy but it is also unique and not to be missed. It’s en route to the impressive Unesco city of Matera built on a rocky outcrop with a picturesque cathedral steeple at its top, and beneath a host of grotta dating back to 10th millennium BC, making it one of the oldest inhabited settlements in the world.

Book a table on the terrace of the Grotta Palazzese in Polignano a Mare, a restaurant set within a dramatic natural cave right beside the sea.

Hop from one whitewashed hilltop village to another – from Locorotondo to Martina Franca to Ostuni - ending in the city of Lecce.

Don’t go there on a diet! Puglia is the vegetable garden of Italy due to its volume of agriculture and as such the freshness of the food is exceptional. It is also home to more than 50 varieties of olive and grape. Hire a bike and cycle the small country lanes that wind between the olive groves and stop for a picnic.


I join them and devour yet another ball of burrata at adorable eatery Osteria del Tempo Perso, uniquely located in a 14th-century cave
