THE NORTHERN TERRITORY FIND THE REAL AUSTRALIAIN

The romantic vision of the Northern Territory – rugged, ‘real’ Australia, with spectacular landscapes, living ancient culture and staggering wildlife – is entirely true. Epic desert scenes, sultry tropical panoramas and stories passed down through hundreds of generations are par for the course. But this land of adventure and

immersive experiences is not the only vision of the Northern Territory. Capital city Darwin mixes outback, Asian and bohemian influences with engaging panache. Art, history and quality restaurants sit happily alongside each other. It is best known as the gateway to the Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk national parks, but it also works as a gateway to Australia. Regular

international flights connect Darwin to Bali in two-and-a-half hours and Manila and Singapore in under five. And, if using the NT as a jetlag-reducing first stop in Australia, flight connections to the rest of the country are plentiful. These connections also include the Red

Centre, for which quirky Alice Springs serves as a hub and the ever-changing colours of Uluru the icon. The twin surprises here – as with the rest of the Northern Territory – are the accessibility and wealth of things to do. Key sites are easy to drive to in conventional vehicles, and properly road-tested products, from guided walks and camel rides to helicopter flights, are ripe for packaging up. Memories that last a lifetime come with the Territory . . .
