on the Med
With some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean and 300 days of sunshine a year, Murcia is the ideal year-round destination for a family holiday. Located between Andalusia and
Valencia in southeast Spain, The Murcia province’s authentic culture and pristine beaches on the Costa Cálida are what draws holidaymakers to its shores. And from its large historical cities to its quaint port towns, Murcia is bursting with activities for the whole family.
CITIES, CASTLES AND COASTLINES In the west of the region lies the port town of Águilas. Visitors can take a trip to the Roman baths, or head to the San Juan de las Águilas castle, right by the water.
Águilas is also home to a charming
town square, perfect for an evening meal to unwind over a sangria or two. For a picture-perfect beach on the
Mediterranean, head to Cuatro Calas, or ‘four coves’. Tucked away amid the rocky cliffs, the beaches’ shallow waters make them safe for young children, while the unique landscape offers beautiful walks around the coastline. Further east is the coastal city of Cartagena. To explore its extensive history, head first to the Roman Theatre Museum to see a detailed restoration of how this ancient theatre used to look, then soak up more of the architecture on a stroll down the blue marble-tiled Calle Mayor. One of Youtravel’s hotels in the area is the four-star Sercotel Alfonso XIII Hotel, in the heart of the city, near many of the key sights.

LAGOON AND LEISURE Some of Murcia’s best beaches are on the shores of the Mar Menor, a huge salt lagoon enclosed from the Mediterranean. Have a go at windsurfing and other popular water sports, or spot pink flamingos and other birds that migrate here for the winter. Hotel Cristina, one of the options
available through Youtravel, is a great family base. Located on the Mar Menor coast, it’s just 20 metres from Playa La Concha’s shallow waters. While the white-sand beaches and
stunning cliffs are among Murcia’s main attractions for families, nature lovers can head inland for some impressive hiking trails, golf courses and wine routes. The Sierra Espuña reserve contains a pine forest, canyons and castles just waiting to be explored on foot or two wheels. If golf is what your customers are after, look no further than the Jack Nicklaus golf trail, which incorporates six unique courses. And to round off the holiday with some R&R, the villages in the north of Murcia are home to some charming wine regions.
