To Brunei...

Priding itself on its unspoilt jungles, as well as its modern capital city, Brunei has been dubbed one of Asia’s best-kept secrets. With an abundance of nature, ecotourism is one of the main attractions of Brunei Darussalam, while the sultanate is also a family-friendly destination. Almost 40% of the country’s forests are

preserved as Ulu Temburong National Park in Temburong District, considered one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems. Home to the rare proboscis monkey and thousands of species of plants and animals, there are no roads into the park, with access via traditional longboats along river corridors, or jungle hiking tracks. However, it’s not all about the jungle…

HISTORICAL BRUNEI Brunei’s culture is deeply rooted in its Malay origins, which are reflected in the language, architecture, ceremonies and customs governing daily life. Though various foreign civilisations have played a role in forming Brunei’s rich history, the traditions of the old

Malay world have left an indelible mark on the culture of modern Brunei.

Kampong Ayer (The Water Village) The world’s oldest water village was dubbed ‘the Venice of the East’ by Italian explorer Antonio Pigafetta, who visited Brunei in the 16th century. Modern-day Kampong Ayer is a village with the amenities you’d expect, such as shops, schools and mosques. The best way to get about is by water taxi.

Brunei Arts and Handicrafts Centre Built on the banks of the Brunei River, the centre was established for the preservation of traditional handicrafts. Its displays include beautiful brocades called ‘jong sarat’, hand- woven baskets, silverware, brassware, woodcarvings and unique replicas of the asymmetrical daggers called ‘keris’.

BRUNEI TODAY While its traditional culture, unspoiled nature and regal history have long been the highlights of a visit to Brunei, it is very much

a 21st-century destination. World-class golf courses, a luxury resort hotel, spas, theme parks and sporting facilities make Brunei a destination that can keep any modern traveller entertained and pampered. Several state-of-the-art meeting, conference, and exhibition venues also draw a steady stream of business travellers.

Accommodation Brunei is known for its hospitable people, so you can expect a truly regal welcome. Hotels range from budget to pure indulgence.

Shop till you drop From traditional markets and tiny shops to huge shopping malls, there’s a variety of goods at incredibly competitive prices. For a local experience, head to Batu Bersurat, a vibrant street teeming with textile and clothing shops. Also worth a visit are Batu Satu and neighbouring Plaza Athirah, which is a favourite of the locals, with a big selection of colourful textile shops. Wander through the streets to find more hidden treasures.
