The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Overtourism: Historic sites need to be protected
Story: Overtourism debate must focus on small communities, says G Adventures founder Places like Disneyland can handle large numbers because they’re designed to – and they can be easily fixed up when the wear and tear of those visitors takes effect. You can’t do that with places like Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat or any number of historic sites. They’re fragile ecosystems and have to be respected, and visitor numbers controlled, if they’re to be preserved. Would you drop the historic Kitty Hawk aircraft in to the charter schedule on a busy day at Gatwick? No, because it is an irreplaceable slice of history, and wasn’t built for that purpose. Phil Bloomfield
Venice: Cruise ships aren’t the city’s only problem
Comment: Working together is more important than ever for cruise sector It has been a tough few weeks for the cruise world, after what happened in Hungary and Italy. Cruising is a great product and we must emphasise that again and again. In regard to Venice, it is not only the cruise ships that are the problem but too many tourists overall. It reminds me of the old saying, ‘Can’t live with them, can’t live without them’, which applies to Venice. A way has to be found to accommodate the numbers visiting this most beautiful of cities. Patrick Doyle
