The best of your letters, comments and social media this week UK tourist taxes: Any rises would be counterproductive
Story: Tourist taxes should be ‘treated with caution’, say MPs The report is right to draw attention to the need to cut tourism VAT as a pre-condition for the imposition of tourist taxes. Hotels in the UK pay twice the EU average in accommodation VAT and are also having to compete against tax-avoiding competitors such as Airbnb properties. While sympathising with local authorities in their desire to get income from somewhere (many of them have seen their income cut by 40% or more in the past decade), any increase in taxes on the hotel sector is likely to be counterproductive and lead to a reduction in tourism and a loss of jobs. Botswana: Calls for boycotts are misguided
Story: Operators to review Botswana holidays after elephant hunting legalised Calls for boycotts are misguided. Botswana has an exemplary record in wildlife conservation. That is why it has the world’s biggest elephant population and is a stronghold for cheetahs, wild dogs, lions and brown hyenas. The Botswanan authorities know what they are doing. They have been doing it for a long time, and for most of that time their conservation strategies have included hunting. Peter Apps
Trish Griffiths @Trish_atTC (Travel Counsellors) Many countries have altered advice about travelling to #SriLanka, including Germany, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland and China (to name a few). Seems the UK is lagging behind. Can we get the ban lifted? @Jeremy_Hunt and @FCOtravel we support #SriLanka
Giles Hawke @gileshawke (Cosmos/Avalon) Does anyone else sometimes think we might be in the middle of some #trumanshow situation where the viewers are laughing their heads off at the complete mess politicians are making of our world?!
