Jackson calls for support after dementia diagnosis

Homeworker Jenny Jackson has urged employers to support staff with potential underlying health conditions after being diagnosed with advanced dementia. Jackson, who runs Luxury Travel
Gurus, part of Holidaysplease, as well as Facebook group Travel Agent Rants and Raves, is to take part in a fundraising walk in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society next month. She said: “We all know someone
who has dementia or could get it. You cannot stop it, but you can manage it. It’s imperative companies understand the stress agents are under. Nobody knows about anyone’s underlying health conditions; things can creep up on you when you least expect it.” Jackson admitted her world
“came crashing down” when she was diagnosed with dementia this summer. After months of dealing with
refunds and cancellations, she thought the stress of her job was taking its toll as she found her memory failing, confusion creeping in and simple tasks becoming harder than usual. After seeing a neurologist and
undergoing an MRI scan, her worst fears were confirmed. “My world fell apart. I was not prepared for what the doctor told

as I can,” she said. “It has helped me get through. I used to be able to work on five or six enquiries at once. Now I can only work on one at a time and I have to write everything down.” She added: “I have a loyal client
base and still offer the same five-star service, even if I don’t always remember customers’ children’s names. The team at Holidaysplease have been really supportive and email me regularly; it’s nice to know I have support.” Jackson is walking the 2km
London Memory Walk on September 11, with a target of £500. So far she has raised just over £100.
