MONTAGE KAPALUA BAY Maui, Hawaii
LOCATION: Tucked away on Maui’s western fringes, Montage Kapalua Bay overlooks the soft shores of Namalu Bay. Located in the secluded resort development area of Kapalua, the property is less than an hour from Kahului Airport.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: After winding down a driveway that leaves the main road far behind us, we arrive at the lobby q > lon} VolÕmni` h>llÜ>Þ ÃiÌ oÛiÀ > koi-wlli` «on`° Àom the lounge at the end, uninterrupted views stretch over the «Ào«iÀÌ޽à ÌÀi«li-ÌiiÀi` inwniÌÞ «ool° /hi ÜhiÌi LÕil`in}à Ìh>Ì form a U-shape around the resort’s heart are unassuming, so I’m blown away upon entering our Grand Residence. It features three bedrooms and bathrooms, a private dining room, laundry room, two living areas and a huge lanai (balcony) complete with everything needed for outdoor dining, along with prime views across the bay towards Molokai. And little Hawaiian touches – cushions saying ‘ohana’, locally made ornaments, books and artwork – ensure every apartment feels like home.
THE FACTS: There are 70 multi-bedroom suites and grand residences available to book at Montage’s 24-acre property, along with a selection belonging to private owners. Having been open for more than 11 years, the resort recently revamped its building facades, standard residences and Hideaway restaurant. Cane and Canoe is the signature Hawaiian dining area, while drinks and light bites are also available at two poolside bars. However, every apartment is set up for in-residence dining, or clients can enjoy elevated
options such as a private lŷ½>Õ or chef’s table experience. There are plenty of activities to keep guests busy, from watersports rentals to lei-making and kids’ programmes.
IDEAL FOR: The property is for anyone seeking solitude and a home-from-home feel. The resort’s mix of privately held and Montage-owned apartments keep things quiet, with just local owners and guests taking advantage of the peaceful Kapalua location. The fully decked-out apartments have everything guests need, making it a strong choice for families too.
EXPLORE: Kapalua is a private resort development, so guests will need to drive to access Maui’s most popular experiences, such as helicopter tours and guided hikes. But the immediate area offers its own rewards – I tackled the Kapalua Coastal Trail, an oceanfront path that passes several golden beaches, while renowned Plantation and Bay Golf Courses are just minutes away.
WOW: The property’s 40,000sq ft wellness centre, Spa Montage, h>Ã > ÃÌ>Ìi-ov-Ìhi->ÀÌ wÌniÃÃ >n` moÛiminÌ ÃÌÕ`io] >Ã Üill >Ã >n inwniÌÞ «ool] hÞ`ÀoÌhiÀ>«Þ >Ài>Ã] Ã>Õn> >n` ÜhiÀl«ool] while traditional treatments include a pineapple body polish.
