It’s been widely reported that Hossein Rezvani’s approach to sartorial matters is echoed in his thinking on design. That’s unsurprising for two reasons: he has been working within the luxury end of the rug market all his life and, in 2017, he was named among Asia Esquire magazine’s best-dressed men. Not that he would want to see

himself as in any way fashionable. Certainly not in the traditional sense anyway. He doesn’t follow what he calls “quick trends”, relying instead on his own sense of style to guide him. When asked to elaborate, he once described that as “classic with a contemporary, casual twist”. He did admit to one indulgence though: his Patek Philippe Nautilus PP 5711 watch, which was made in the same year that he was born. His rug designs are immensely complex, featuring

up to one million knots per square metre. This means that two weavers working for four to fi ve hours a day will take seven months to knot a carpet of six square metres. In 2007, he employed 25 weavers; today he employs more than 500 of them.

DOMOTEX : Are there any particular projects that stand out? HR : Yes indeed. Every project has been one of a kind and truly special to me. But designing a piece for [the former Russian leader] Mikhail Gorbachev’s Global Green Oscar fundraiser in 2017 was one of the highlights. My piece was auctioned for $30.000 - and it was donated to an organisation fi ghting global warming. I was then invited to the Oscar viewing of Elton John the following Sunday, that indeed was lots of fun - good memories when you can contribute to making the world a better place.

DOMOTEX : What new collections are you working on for the future - and what can people expect or hope from Domotex 2020? HR : The 2020 collection is now in full production mode, so hopefully, you will see some beautiful new pieces. [he always looks forward to meeting clients from all over the world who, over years, have become friends]. So Domotex is not only a business but a gathering of friends. We are a small family united by a beautiful product and, hopefully, the family will grow because in real life, a big family is always more fun.

DOMOTEX : And, as a regular supporter of Domotex, is there anything about the expo that makes it special? HR : As I said earlier, thanks to the technical possibilities nowadays, you only see your partners two to three times a year: at an exhibition, at an event and maybe mid-season, so Domotex is special because all of them come together from all over the world. My retailers come from China, Japan, Australia, Canada and the Middle East, so it does get to be the centre of the industry for a week.”
