DOMOTEX DESIGN TRANSITION 46

designed to complement the location’s impressive natural environment. A private jetty links the lake to the hotel complex, which is all set against the most awe-inspiring backdrop of the Italian Alps. But it’s the outdoor area that’s interesting. It features

vertical botanical gardens with the restaurant that adjoins it open on one side and the fl ooring design creates a seamless indoor-outdoor fl ow. To achieve this, Urquiola used thermo-treated FSC-

certifi ed ash decking custom-created by Domotex exhibitor Ravaioli Legnami, a leader in the wooden profi le market and well known for its new ways of conceiving decking that overcomes all the classical design rules. It was installed in co-operation with the Italian company, Pavilegno. The decking planks used in this case were very narrow and had a special concealed milling – characteristics that helped to create a vibrant and unique visual aesthetic. Over in Abu Dhabi, The Louvre stands as the world

renowned architect Jean Nouvel’s most spectacular creation to date and has won widespread international acclaim. Its defi ning feature is its roofl ine – a modern interpretation of the classic Arabic dome. A slivery lattice of complex geometric patterns, the dome fi lters sunlight to create a constantly changing “rain of light” on the fl ooring. For the outdoor area of the museum’s waterfront café, Ateliers Jean Nouvel partnered with the design team of Domotex exhibitor YVYRA to develop Exterpark Louvre, an exquisite teak decking installed using an ingenious system of magnetic clips.

OUTDOOR INFLUENCES CREATE ATMOSPHERE The planks were inspired by the decking used on luxury boats. The individual timbers were only 57mm wide and designed to be installed without visible gaps or screws in seconds. They are simply clipped on to an aluminium substructure using a special tool. The planks combined to create a unifi ed and elegant outdoor fl oorscape. The individual timbers were quick to install and can be easily removed for redeployment at any time, according to YVYRA Export Director Mario Rodríguez, who worked closely with Nouvel in the system’s development. At the previous Domotex show, Switzerland’s Li&Co presented their

new Outex Design outdoor fl ooring; a wood-look decking product comprising a non-slip, easy-care and very weather-resistant synthetic pattern layer which is laminated on to thermo-treated pine planking. It was fi rst shown to the public on the deck of fl ooring company Floover’s showroom in Barcelona. Floover uses the showroom for its prestige events such as receptions. The company has a joint venture with Li&Co and sells its contract fl ooring products worldwide. “The new decking

design gives us a solution for decks that boasts a similarly realistic wood look as the laminated products used indoors,” said Floover Sales Manager Jérôme Gaubert. It is ideal, he stated, for customers who want to create a quality visual connection between all their indoor and outdoor areas. The Hamburg-based architect Julia

Erdmann believes in creating spaces that can be seen as both stimulating and relaxing. For the gourmet Bianc restaurant and the adjoining Picnic Bar owned by the celebrity chef Matteo Ferrantino within Hamburg’s HafenCity precinct, she managed to create a space which has a beautiful warm and inviting atmosphere. She explained that her intention had been to give all her diners the feeling that they were “somewhere in the Mediterranean”. The result is both a new culinary destination and a portal to a world of Mediterranean charm, where guests can dine in a piazza setting beneath an olive tree canopy. With its loving attention to detail, the design of the restaurant is reminiscent both of southern Italy’s Apulia region and Portugal – the two locations that have most infl uenced
