Ferrantino’s Mediterranean cuisine. For the interior, she utilised outdoor fl ooring in order to enhance the sort of al-fresco feel fundamental to the restaurant’s design. The “Biancone” natural outdoor tiles were specially treated to meet all the demands of indoor use. As in Apulia, where the chef is from, the tiles have been laid with wide joints and suitably roughed edges. Erdmann believes that, when used indoors, outdoor fl ooring can be a highly eff ective way of generating a unique atmosphere. Valverdi, a relatively new company which is based in the south of England, off er their own Indoor- Out co-ordinating tile range. They comprise 20mm frost-proof outdoor tiles in porcelain which match with thinner indoor versions, creating seamless transitions. They are slip, stain and algae resistant and are completely colourfast for longevity. Another architecture studio, Ritz & Ghougassian made the process look simple by extending a Melbourne house using a minimal palette that saw blockwork walls left exposed both inside and out to give a completely cohesive eff ect.

Eff ective transitions don’t just have to involve inside and outdoor spaces but also rooms and areas of a building. The fl ooring design brand Forbo has created a range of carpet tiles that can be used to develop a more casual aesthetic in all diff erent zones within an open-plan offi ce. The Tessera Nexus brand has developed the carpet tiles to respond to the evolving designs for the workplace, focusing on seamlessly connecting zones and, in turn, encourage eff ective communication. Forbo hopes that this collection will encourage collaborative working by connecting the “unique identities” of areas such as kitchens, meeting spaces and workstations. The soft tiles can also be used to turn break areas into living room-

like environments for employees to relax, in eff orts to create more casual workplaces. “The trend of de-formalising an offi ce is now key to ensuring stress free environments,” says Forbo. Available in nine colourways, linear, geometric patterns are overlaid on a base colour. A contemporary sheen texture is created from the additional metallic fi bres, designed to promote a “softer, less corporate aesthetic”. The collection’s simple colours have been chosen in order to complement the subtly refl ective textures of the tiles. In spaces with light usage, like meeting rooms, the brand suggests using carpet tiling for a soft, comfortable appearance. While it may be more durable, vinyl or linoleum fl oor coverings are more suited for kitchens and corridors.
