Under the heading of New Coverings there is a concerted eff ort to address today’s trends towards healthy living and working conditions, a commitment to environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes. Behind it all is the goal of a circular fl ow economy, and – at the same time – customer interest in trendy designs and colours for ideal living and wellness environments. Health concerns these days extend to the materials used in living
environments. Today’s buyers are interested in products that don’t compromise on quality and powerfully appeal to the senses. Recycling, use of environmentally friendly materials, production methods and avoidance of substances harmful to the environment are no longer just trends to talk about; they are now seen as an absolute necessity as companies take on responsibility for preserving nature for the benefi t of generations to come. Flooring trends, like all others, tend to change over the years as homeowners acquire new tastes and emerging technologies enables manufacturers to deliver an ever-greater variety of designs. And while trend forecasting is never a precise art, there are strong indications that the desire for longer, wider boards is not going to end any time soon and the bleached book, along with those lighter whites - or at least white undertones – will help satisfy the move towards a more natural, Scandinavian-style look. Of the darker colours, those that have been infl uenced by paint and fashion trends, walnut is likely to be popular in 2022. However, unlike carpets, they tend not go in and out of fashion;
each plank has its own individual characteristics, so colour and shades can vary, adding to a sense of authenticity and, given that they have been used in homes for centuries, they’re always a good bet. At any rate, wood fl oors, whether solid or engineered, will also have the advantage of immense durability, not to mention resistance to everyday wear and tear and as natural products, and of course, they hold the warmth. Last year saw a resurgence of the
European white oak among the lighter woods. Consumers tended to be drawn to their organic texture and warmth, especially in those wide planks that gained momentum with the likes of dark charcoal, a colour with its own range of hues. All of this was, of course, in keeping with the move away from the once-popular pastel-grey fi nishes and towards the more natural tones that seemed closer to their natural state.
