Promoting financial literacy
Educational Trust Since the move in 2002 by then CISI chair Scott Dobbie CBE FCSI(Hon) to expand the Institute’s remit beyond its traditional area of training for professionals, the CISI has been actively engaged with those keen to enter the financial services sector. The CISI Educational Trust charity
was founded in October 2010 “to promote for the public benefit the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of securities and investment”. Initially focused on offering a small
number of independent schools the ability to provide CISI qualifications, the Educational Trust’s remit soon broadened, including partnering with the Personal Finance Education Group (now Young Money) to provide teaching resources to support financial education in the school curriculum. Matthew Bolton, teaching and learning
specialist at CISI, used his background in education to help develop these resources. “Then the focus shifted somewhat to careers and looking at how we could help prepare young people for the world of work, and educate them beyond their mainstream studies,” he says.
In 2013, with support from local
firms and members that were passionate about developing young people’s careers in finance, the Trust helped set up an education programme in Liverpool, which involved funding a teaching post in the city to deliver CISI qualifications to 16- to 18-year-olds. “Firms took it upon themselves to offer
opportunities to young people, to offer them the chance to go to their offices for a few days, and to run ‘insight’ events where students could engage in speed networking sessions, and learn about all- important soft skills,” he says.
Working with schools and colleges in the past academic year The Trust partnered with 24 schools during the past academic year, with 315 16- to 18-year-olds studying towards the level 2 Fundamentals of Financial Services, level 3 Introduction to Securities & Investment, and the level 3 Certificate for Introduction to Securities & Investment qualifications. There were some excellent overall results achieved. We would like to say a huge congratulations to all students who passed CISI exams, which were taken in
CISI Future Foundation
In 2022, the CISI formed a new organisation, the CISI Future Foundation, to act as a grant-giving authority to partner with existing organisations, both in the UK and internationally, to “improve financial literacy skills, the experience and outcomes of financial learning, through the provision of grants”. The Foundation currently has an application for charitable status pending with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The Foundation’s initial and principal focus will be to support
young people around the world from disadvantaged backgrounds, through new programmes or initiatives to improve their financial literacy skills. Young people will be empowered to contribute to society in a meaningful way by being more employable, enabled to manage their own budgets and finances, and equipped with transferable skills that they can use generally to improve the quality of their lives. In March and April, we sought nominations and applications
for the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. We interviewed candidates shortlisted from an incredible 209 applications, and

will be announcing the full complement of trustees in September. At the launch announcement in April, then CISI CEO,
Simon Culhane, Chartered FCSI said: “We are delighted to be launching our Future Foundation. Building young people’s learning and engagement with financial literacy and money management is an investment in their own personal financial futures. The CISI has offices and representatives in Qingdao, Barcelona, Dubai, Dublin, Lagos, Mumbai, Nairobi, Manila and Colombo. The Foundation is therefore keen to consider initiatives and programmes from globally based organisations which match its values and objectives.”

addition to their core A-Level or equivalent qualifications. The Trust also sponsors teachers to
deliver CISI qualifications to sixth-form students attending state schools who would not ordinarily get the opportunity to study towards CISI qualifications. These education programmes are free of charge to students, with a focus on employability. Education programmes were offered to students in Liverpool, Londonderry, Birmingham, and London. Students had the opportunity to work with CISI members from all over the UK via the ‘Invest in You’ employability workshops funded by the Trust and delivered by education charity The Talent Foundry. These workshops enabled students to develop their transferable skills, create effective CVs, and participate in mock interviews. The Trust would like to thank all
those who have offered the opportunity for students to study towards CISI qualifications, those who delivered them, and the CISI members in the regions who took the time to support the students.
