n 10 February 1992, the Securities Institute was formed, filling a gap left by the London Stock Exchange’s (LSE) decision


to end individual membership, and adopting its motto ‘My word is my bond’.

Since then, the Institute has grown from one London-based office serving 4,500 members to a global organisation with eight international offices and 43,500 members in over 100 countries. It has


maintained its focus, set out in its original mission statement and its more recent purpose statement, on setting and raising standards of professional excellence and integrity for financial services sector professionals globally. Formed in the same month and year that


the Maastricht Treaty, which laid the foundation for the European Union, was signed, the Institute has outlasted the UK’s membership of the EU, weathered the global financial crisis of 2007–8 and, more recently, the Covid-19 pandemic, showing remarkable resilience in its ongoing evolution during challenging times.
