The rules of spelling in Irish can be very strict. Remember the following points and your spelling will improve!
• There are two groups of vowels: leathan (a, o and u) and caol (i and e). • There is no problem with these vowels sitting side by side in a word, e.g. beo, teach or fuinneog. • The rule comes into place when one or more consonants are placed between two vowels, e.g. mise, seomra or even staighre.
• The rule states that the vowel before the consonant or consonants must be from the same group as the vowel after the consonant or consonants. Look at the following examples: o mise: i and e are from the same group (caol).
o seomra: o and a are from the same group (leathan). o staighre: i and e are from the same group (caol). o Éireannach: i and e are from the same group and a and a are from the same group.
